tweeter suggestions

Postby black300zx » Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:39 pm

I'm starting to plan out a new set of mains for my room. The D8's I made last winter are just too damn big for my room. They don't sound good unless you're at the back wall. Additionally, moving 200lbs of speakers out of my parents house in a couple years isn't too appealing. I'm gonna move them to my basement, which is probably much better suited to the D8's, and make a smaller pair of mtm's for my room.

I'm not in any rush to build these, I'm just planning right now. So far what I've decided on:

MTM's
6.7/7" woofers

Right now I'm leaning towards sealed, mainly for space concerns. I REALLY like how my Peerless exlusive 8's sound in my car, so right now I'm planning on using the 7" version.

They only need .25 cubes each, so they'll stay nice and small, as well as keeping material costs down.

Now I need a tweeter. The mids play clean up past 4khz, so there's no need to find a tweeter that extends very low. I'm planning on spending up around 100 on the tweeters right now, but obviously I won't object to something cheaper if it sounds good. Also, I think I want to give metal domes a shot this time. Any suggestions? I liked how ryan's old LPG 26na's sounded, so I took a look at the 26NAfm's.

I also ran across these:

The dayton reference's are also on my mind. I'm gonna pick up a behringer mic and pre-amp from PE to use with speakerworkshop to design the x-overs myself.

Any suggestion or input?

Well I don't want to make another cookie-cutter DIY project again. I know it's a proven design, but I want to try my hand at designing the x-overs from scratch this time.

As for budget, the Peerless exclusive 7's are ~70 a piece, so call it $300 shipped for the woofers. Call it ~$400 for the drivers. I'm 99% set on using the peerlesses, so I'm just looking for a tweet right now. Only reason I can see that I'd change that is if they aren't available when I go to buy them.

Get the Seas 27tbfc, they have the lowest distortion of any tweeter under 50 bucks a pop. The only other dome tweeter I look at are the Hiquphon tweeters, but those are 100 a piece and cant be considered. My point is, there is nothing like the Seas 27tbfc/g or 27tdfc for under $100.

And im not just saying that stuff either. I'm sure i have no cred, but check out
zaphaudio (tweeter mishmash)
mark k's tests
and others, they've been tested by the diy community as very reliable(madisound will have VC replacements for a long time I think), consistant spec'd, and the tweeter to beat.
