I made a previous version with RCA outputs. it was larger but had the same functionality. Small quantities aren't terribly feasible or cost-effective, but PM me if you're serious.

football, thanks for the comments man.

Once I get some hardware working on a new project, I'll post it. You know the problem with engineers - feature creep. Turns out I'm not satisfied and it needs some more work ;)

You could get one of those mini jack to RCA cords. It should work well, right? I've got one of those running from my speakers to my receiver right now.

That's the thing I was talking about. Don't know why you couldn't use one in this situation, except for space.

Eezip: I know exactly. I am working on my aero engineering degree and started a company which builds diagnostic equipment for semi-truck repair shops. Not being satisfied is a good thing, keeps progress going :)

Greetings from a new member who is interested in this little device. I have always wanted to incorporate a USB device into my car audio system. I have RCA inputs for the headunit with a stereo line already installed. Would this device work for playing music files off of a thumb drive through the head unit in the car? If so, I'll take one!

Ok, so this won't work the way I want it too. How hard would it be for you to create something like what I described? I do not want to put out the money for a new headunit with the USB interface installed. I'd rather have something simple like this, that I can have hidden, and play my music files off my thumb drive. I'm sure you could sell a bunch of those!

Nitrous, thanks man :)

Cougar, wow, it looks so tiny in your pic. Thank you for the kind words.

th3sub, the problem about making something simple that will read music off a USB device is twofold:
1. USB requires a host, which in this case would be what your thumb drive plugs into. So you need a processor.
2. USB requires an OS to run USB protocol, drivers, etc.

There are some microcontrollers with USB interfaces. I can look into it, but my experience and expertise is in analog and power design. I haven't had a lot of digital or code experience - just enough to read IR remote commands, control LCDs, and some other simple things. The new generation of Yamaha receivers, like the RX-V2700, can do this and they only have DSPs and microcontrollers in them. So it can be done with less than a full-fledged computer.

It's a significant jump to go from this little, code-less, self-contained USB DAC to the system you want. It's certainly doable, but there are other people who would be better suited to the job. Sorry pal. It's a great idea, and I'll keep it in mind for the future, but I have too many things on my plate right now to devote the time into developing something like that.

I saw a schematic online for an mp3 player you could build yourself using an IDE hard drive. I can't find the design right now or I'd be able to give you more details. It might be possible to adapt that to pull files from a USB device, but it's been too long since I looked at it to be sure.

eezip,

No hard feelings. I didn't think there would be that much involved with making such an item work properly. Instead of actually buying a whole new head unit, I could probably get away with buying a small MP3 player instead. Your doing some great work, keep it up!
