protection speakers from sunlight damage?

Postby eezip » Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:59 am

How do you guys do this if your listening room has windows? I've been pulling the blinds shut but I'm thinking about getting some nice, soft cloths to cover the speakers with when I'm not using them. Besides, the blinds still allow little slits of light through. Is getting cloths a good idea? Do you guys have any other ideas?

Do you have/would you consider some cloth grills?

What about, and yes I realize this is not a vehicle, tinting/shading the windows...
There are window treaments and large films, that you can apply yourself or have a business apply, that will help block some of the damaging effects of sunlight. They range from pratically clear to opaque, with a variety of different looks from clear to a privacy tint or even a reflective finish.

I guess I would otherwise choose a simple but slighty thicker than usual sheet...It'll help to keep dust off as well.

ditto.. unless you are talking about some pre-80's speakers, or are planning on having these speakers sit in the sun for 40 years, it really shouldn't be an issue.

that finish will fade if left in the sun.

I'd imagine any of the components from the surround to the cone and dustcap could fade depending on the material.

I'm sorry, I didn't specify the speakers. They are the Dyn 42s in my sig - the newer ones with solid wood cabs, not the older ones with veneer. They're brand new and I don't want to regret not taking care of them in the future. I know the finish will fade if left in the sub. I guess I'll look into some cloths then.

I do have the factory grilles which are on when I'm not listening to them.

Thanks guys!

Well, I guess if you don't leave them in the sub you'll have the problem solved!
