brahma 10 home box rec?

Postby Kiltedyak50 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 4:18 pm

Looks like I'm going to have some trouble unloading a used brahma with a blown VC. I think I'm going to try and turn it into a nice home sub (just have to find a home amp that can take running at 2 ohms (to the good vc))

Anyone have good suggestions for a home set-up for a Brahma 10 dvc 2ohm? I'd go to the adire site for specs but...................

I want to go ported, with a good mix of SQ and SPL, box size obv not an issue b/c it's for home.

What size box?
Tuning?
Rec. Power to it?

I'm thinking 2- 2.5 cube tuned to 35hz with 300w?

If this is primarily for watching movies I'd tune way lower....being a 10" though you don't wanna tune too low so 28hz really jumps out at me right now; that's what I'd go with. Either that or 30hz. 300-500w sounds great; might as well just make it 350w and get a Rhythmic plate amp for like $160. I'm not sure but weren't the Brahmas relatively small box subs? I mean aside from a ported 15" but...I'd go 2.0 net and not much higher. But I have never used one so take this opinionwith a grain of salt...

Moved to Home A/V

Why not dump a 100 into is and get that VC fixed?

that's what I'd do. I think you'll have a tough time finding a 2 ohm amp for it.

One thing you could also do is put a big resistor in series with the voice coil so that you can have a 4 ohm load. It'll just eat up half the power so you'll need to get an amp twice as powerful as for just the one voice coil, though.

I figured fixing the VC was out of the question b/c Adire was done. Are their 3rd party shops out there that will repair it? (im assuming their aren't kits out there where I can do it myself). I actually got the woofer from Kyle at Acoustic Visions. That resistor idea ain't bad, I was thinking about that as well.

28 hz is a bit low for me, I do want some output for music. That Rythmik plate amp def looks like the way to go, and is a doable price for me. http://www.acoustic-visions.com/~acoustic/products/subwoofer_amplifiers/index.shtml

So 30hz, 2 cu, 300-500w?

I'll bet FI could find something to recone it with.

The thing about the resistor idea is that using only one voice coil will change parameters, so it may not sound like the brahma it did before. That's kinda why I'd be inclined to use that as a last effort. you'd probably infer that extra cost of reconing in getting the extra amp power needed, resistor, etc.

This may sound a little dumb..... but when it comes to sub repair I am def not savvy. Isn't a blow VC different than a re-cone (say due to the surround falling apart, etc). I figured the VC issue would be somewhere in the motor area, below the cone.

Let me describe the problem and let me know if I'm way off base.
1. Push down on the cone with your hand = hear a scratching sound (not too bad)
2. I hear that same scratching sound when I run it in series (to 4omhs) at low volume. However, it still sounds great at higher volume and you can't hear the "scratching" at higher volume
3. run it at 2 ohms to just one set of terminals= no scratching
4. run it at 2 ohms to the other set of terminals= hear the scratching

Can anyone impart some wisdom? Many thanks for everyones help!

for a blown voice coil a recone is done. a recone consists of all the moving parts- voice coil, which is attached to the former, which is attached to the spider and cone, which is attached to the surround. It isn't just a new cone as the name implies.

looks like this: Image

and you drop it into/glue onto the basket and motor: Image
