Laminating MDF to Plywood?

Found an interesting article today:

http://www.resfreq.com/usefulinfoonwood.html

In it the author recommends laminating plywood to MDF to combine the dampening properties of MDF with the rigidity of the ply. He settled on DAP ALEX Plus to bond the layers, but I'm also considering Green Glue..

Anyone here built a cabinet this way?

Its an interesting read for sure. I remember an old set of Jensen floor speakers we had were a similar build. IIRC it was particle board laminated with ply and then a veneer. They sounded fantastic and the enclosures were dead when you wrapped your knuckles on the side but I think that if the 1.5" thick walls were made of MDF the results would have been similar.

I might give it a shot..

here's the cabinet design:

Baffles are from PE, 2x4 frame.. Easiest speaker I'll ever build :)

Given the current price of lumber...

Well even that aside...

Brace it properly.

Veneer it if you want it pretty.

The rest will only be found by a microphone.

It'll be behind the screen anyway, will probably get covered with black velvet to soak up transmitted light.

BTW, I called Fargo & Alex Menards - both of the idiots that answered the phones said they would have to special order the Batlic Birch plywood.. I went to the Moorhead store on lunch and found it on the rack, wrote down the SKU, and called the other two stores back. Guess what, in-stock at both places.. :cwm11:

Towers will go back upstairs when this unit gets built..

So, it's 8' long, and 2' wide? Or are you gonna use multiple sheets of ply?

exactly..

I bought some Green Glue today, interesting stuff, runnier than I thought out of the tube..

Next couple months I'll have to order the baffles and decide what I'm gonna do for speakers..

Pretty sure you have to have an IQ < 75 to work at menards, it's almost a job requirement.

And that is an over statement. :cwm11:

I think you should migrate the towers east.....to my house.

Did I miss it, what speakers are you using?
