abs inop light is on....

Postby Derek » Sun Dec 04, 2005 9:03 am

so.....my abs light is on....and my abs brakes don't engage....but...the brakes themselves work fine....another odd thing....my "brake" light is also on....which means my parking brake is engaged....only....it isn't....i don't think i've ever even used it....

the car accelerates like normal....nothing is grinding or anything....so i'm pretty sure the rear brakes are not engaged....

could sensor just be frozen to hell or something? i'm at a loss....i'm like my abs brakes back...but they are not totally necessary....

wondering if i should break out the hair dryer and head to mom and dad's garage and heat everything up....since it's not about to warm up here....

In my last car when the 'brake' light would come on it meant that the brakes needed replacement pronto. As for the ABS thing...your ABS unit could be frozen or something...I'm not sure on that one though.

This happened to my dad's truck, turned out to be faulty sensors. Replaced em and no troubles since then.

Probably sensors. Sensors, a faulty control module, or tire size differences are the only reasons the ABS INOP light will come on in these cars. It seems that the year range your car is in (93-97) especially have problems with the ABS sensors in the rear. I have another friend with a 96 'bird that has been ABSless for a few yeras now because of his sensor. Just one of those things.

thanks for the info joshie....

whenever i shop for tires....my tire size never pops up :) i had 245/50/16's on it when i bought it.... in very serious needs of front tires at the moment....but....

i'm gonna get a big screen instead.

Not sure as I haven't had to deal with it myself. Only time I see ABS INOP is after dynoing or after some passes at the track (my 26" drag tires grow and set off the light around 110MPH).

Yeah, thats standard 16" diameter tire size for these cars. What tires do you normally run?

What kind of big screen, size and DLP/LCD/Plasma/Projection or conventional CRT?

Derek, it could be a sensor, but, in my case, there was a broken wire somewhere under the hood.

I wish you luck my friend.
