Help: Old impala engine/drivetrain mods...

Postby John » Sun Sep 03, 2006 1:29 pm

Any ideas for mods...?

Right now I'm am in the process of figuring things out and will likely be purchasing this car...Early 70's original impala custom coupe less than 50k miles.

I want to get some ideas and direction for some simple engine mods. It's a pretty much stock 350 ci, 2 brl carb with the turbo 350 trans...Performs perfect for stock originial...

I have been thinking about a new trans for the old 60's impala (replace the 2 speed). Since I would now have the opportunity, I'm thinking about putting that (turbo 350) tranny in my old impala and getting a new trans for the new impala...

but how about the other simple things, like the carb, etc...

Stereo, even cd player, is going to have to wait...Can't decide if I should tint (light) or or not.

Wanna sell the older Impala?

I would say stroke out the 350 to a 383. That would get you plenty of power and it should be reliable.

before deciding mods, decide your goal.

do you want 400 HP, 300HP, daily driver type reliability, fuel mileage, weekend drag car, ability to blow up diffs when brother takes it for a spin, what?

decide what is TRULY important to you before you turn you first bolt free. Once you start going up in cubes/cam/heads, things start to get skewed (fuel economy v power v reliability).

I'd like to up the power, and try to keep the reliability...Still driveable from day to day. The strip would only be a once in awhile trip, maybe once or twice a year.

Actually, before any of that I now think I am going to tear some of it down, replace seals, etc...whatever needs it.

I've sort of reassessed things, and think I should really wait until next spring before I start dumping a ton of money into the car. I do go to shows, so I'm going to get it dressed up for that first...

find a decent set of 202/160 heads on ebay. have a machine shop clean them up and do a mild port an polish. change to a med. size cam. get a edelbrock 4 bbl intake with spreadbore config. then get a decent rebuilt q-Jet carb. change out the rocker arms to some roller rockers. 1.6 ratio preferred. if you want some decent gas milage and want to change the tranny go with a 700R4 and a set of 3.23 gears in the rear.

I don't have any good ones as the weather is crappy here now, anyway I don't post pics of my vehicle(s) for security/theft reasons...maybe I can flash you one some other time though.
