My brother's new TA :) Sort of

Postby redderthanafeut » Thu Sep 07, 2006 8:16 am

Yup, he's been looking for this car for about 6 months now, and actually he's got 2 now :) This is the one he's going to work on, there is another on it's way today with some parts that this one needs (mufflers, headers, starter, suspension parts, snowflake wheels)

Link to some pictures:

The car was by no means clean and we didn't spend a lot of time getting the right shots. Still some decent ones though...

The car is a 1979 Pontiac Trans AM, with:
6.6 liter, Pontiac 400 engine
WS6 suspension package (upgraded package with 4 wheel disc brakes)
4 speed manual transmission
About 86,000 miles, less than that on the engine...

It's not a numbers matching car, the original engine was a 301. He'd rather have the bigger engine than the numbers matching anyway though...

The car had been sitting for about 3 years before he bought it, so it's by no means at peak performance. So far it needed a new radiator, and some wire coming from or going to the distributor came loose (3 hour ordeal to find that out).

Best 0-60 time we've gotten so far is 7.012 seconds, but it feels fast and sounds awesome anyway:cwm11:

Upgrades on the horizon:
Headers from the other TA
Mufflers from the other TA (the current mufflers sound pretty raspy)
Starter from the other TA (current one is intermittent)
Snowflake wheels from the other TA
Bigger Cam

What else would you do to make it faster than Josh's car? :) That's definitely not the goal, this car has it's place and it's not racing.

I hear wearing a mustache makes it a whole second faster :)

but really.....I hope his new wheels don't have a negative offset like those do. I just hate when wheels stick out on cars.

Sing it with me:

Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin'
Ah we gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go, and a short time to get there
I'm eastbound, just watch old Bandit run
Mis-spellers of the world, untie!
There are only 10 types of people in the world,
those who understand binary, and those who don't.

What he really wants to do is the stunt like in that Mountain Dew commercial where they flip the car, grab a mountain dew from someone (through the t-tops), drink it in the air, and then land. Should be easy.

Yes, the new wheels will be the stock set that actually came with this car. We don't like these Radial TA's much either...

I own a 77 Trans Am that pretty much became my daily driver. For any info that you want check out

They can tell you anything you would pretty much need to know about these cars.

I'm very tempted... in our local sales paper, there's a pair of 77's listed together.

One wrecked with a 6.6 and trans, the other in good shape but needing a motor.

$1000 obo.

oh so tempted.
whyfore is I here?

That was almost my first car, 79 in great shape with the blue color package, dark blue exterior...

This thing was in excellent original condition, ran very well and very fast...I had the chance to buy it from a family member, but unfortunately I didn't have my permit yet and ended up deciding against it...probably a good thing in the but dangerous first car...
