i buy actual hard drives and put them into portable cases. I rarely run across a portable that is performance oriented for a decent price. You can make one, get a 3.5 inch seagate 320 7200 rpm with a 16mb cache 3gbp/s SATAII and slap it in a portable USB 2.0 case, spend $110 or so and beat the pants off of the portables at worstbuy or circuit ****ty. One series of the WD portables has a 2MB CACHE! BLECH!

I bought a 320 gig maxtor usb right before I left... Paid $100 for it 3 months ago... I LOVE IT... need more room tho.. it's over half full... South park episodes alone take up over 20gigs (for every episode).... and then i have 43gigs of music... then a few other shows... LOST, Band of Brothers (left the dvd's at home with the GF)....and a few brit shows for the roommates.

They should be 100-200MB max.
Yeah, I wasn't sure how to interpret that either. I assume he's saying that he has every episode and that totals around 20GB. If it were 20GB each, they would have to be like 9-10 times bigger than a normal 1080P HD episode, which would be pretty impossible. lol.
For the original poster, I personally recommend getting a much larger external or building an array like Nick mentioned. 2 years ago, I thought my 160GB external would be enough: I now have around 4TB of storage between my house and my girlfriend's house.
For something quick, easy, affordable, and dependable, I might suggest this:

I have a few computer friends with one and they love em.

Not a horrible choice, but it's only a 2MB buffer, so it's not very friendly for "live transfer" like watching a movie.
I recommend this one Hyah!! 8 MB cache, and $4 more for double the space of the WD = a great bargain. One caveat -- it requires external power, but if that's not an issue, it's worth it.

Beats the crap out of anything portable out there with a 16mb cache and perpendicular recording. And it cost less. Plus, seagates all have 5 year warranty and a very high MTFB (mean time between failure), meaning they last a long time.
I also have two of these in RAID-0 in my workstation. I use a smaller 2.5 inch Seagate 7200 rpm 8mb cache in a smaller vantec Nexstar case for portability.

Very portable, no external power, fast for a 2.5 inch drive. I strongly suggest using a real hard drive and just getting a case.
