Home network/file transfer

Postby Thoraudio » Mon Jun 18, 2007 9:43 am

The old computer was just that, old. have about 70gigs on the 80 gig hard drive, the P4 1.8 is draggin, and the 9600xt is gasping. Got a decent little number from the Dell outlet for cheapsies. Now I gotta move all my movies/music/games from one to the other.

I've got a router, with extra ethernet ports. Can I just hook up the network cable and transfer stuff?

That'd be too easy.
whyfore is I here?

Yes, it would be very easy, that being said, good luck!

Either share the appropriate folder from the old computer and pull, or open a folder up on the new computer and push from the old one.

\\$COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME if you have an explict share defined, or \\$COMPUTERNAME\C$ is the "hidden" share for the whole C drive. You'll probably need the admin password to hit the C$ share.

Beyond Compare is pretty nice if you are syncing stuff on a semi regular basis.

It is nice to be able to see all your stuff, then to just be able to move it. I likes it a lot!!
