A couple questions with my system.
Posted: Mon Jul 07, 2008 9:54 pm
Ok so last fall i purchased two of the XJ-12 prototype speakers from acoustic visions.
i'm now finally putting them together.
i'm using a 4.25 cubed box @ 29 hz, all just 1 single sheet of 3/4" mdf. using a slot port. now will this be strong enough? will I need to reenforce anywhere with triangular pieces?
What kind of amplifier should I run to them? I was thinking a hifonics 1206d?
And last but not least.
What size of power wire would I need to run that kind of power for an amplifier?
right now I have 4 guage from knuconcpets, rest of my system at teh moment is in sig.
sorry for the spaced out post.
thanks in advance

You may want to brace your box a little. Maybe just a couple strips of wood or dowel rods.
I'm not familiar with those subs, what is their VC config? What is your budget? the hifonics wouldn't be bad.
If you're running over 1000 watts I'd do at least 2 guage. I did 1/0 for mine just for a little overkill. Can't hurt, and just trying to minimize that voltage drop to the back as much as possible.

There are also XJ-12 12" models available!
They have a highish Q of about .9 (system Q, not driver Qts) but in the car that would give you a lot of thump, essentially flat anechoic to 40Hz and with cabin gain that would be insane. Same motor, slightly different parameters. They also look good in 3.5ft^3 tuned to about 20Hz. They would be a good HT sub in that type of enclosure being essentially flat to 30Hz (anechoic) and fall off fairly quick below that point. In-room measurements as a typical company would post they would be good to under 20Hz flat in-room with some good HT excitement in the 30-60hz range.
Parameters on the XJ-12 with VCs in parallel (dual 8s).
cms: .233 mm/N
xmax: 26-27mm one way
Pmax: Lets say 600W which is conservative. If you thermally fry the thing your doing something very stupid.
That's about all the info I have. Budget is 250~ for an amp. But wouild gladly spend less if it's good enough. Looking at a 2 ohm load
That help you put more?

Hmmm, IKE has about 4 pages of Class Ds right now... They also have Orion 600Ds for $99, you could get a pair ( around 300-400 wrms per sub, might not be enough, or may be just right depending on box), just a thought... They also Have Viper 2400s (2400 watts for both subs, might be a little much) for $355.... That is a TON of power...
Lemme think about your box for a day or so and post back, I remember reading about those subs when they first came out.... I was quite interested in them at the time...

Any help would be terrific. I might be stuck with the box as I'm in the process of liquid nailing it together. Only have 2 big clamps so it's part by part daily. I know I put one of the xj-12's in 1.4 cubed sealed off only 200-300 watts and it was pretty impressive so I'm thinking around 500 a piece in the ported as it's going to be extremely loud.
I'm wide open for all suggestions. You guys helped me with my last setup and I loved it so thanks again in advance

Ok, so after some looking over my box with KU40...
It's 5.7 cubes @ 31 hz.
Will I need to put bracing on the front baffle? I'm thinking some triangular pieces to help with the moments being put on the jokes from the weight of the speakers (40 lbs each)
Also for an amplifer...
I was looking at a kicker 1000.1... but at 300 it's a bit pricey.
Can I get anything @ 2 ohm around 800-1200 watts for cheaper?

The amplifiers from IKE. How dependent are they?
I'm really deciding between something cheaper and the kick 1000.1
I'm debating buying it off ebay with a 2 year warranty from the seller or an actual wholeselling site.

Seriously, I have bought about 10 reforbs from IKE and never had a problem. I just bought an MD2N last week. Wife has a Viper600 in the Jetta that was $99 3 years ago, and it has been wanging everyday...
Just browse the class D section, but like I said, you could get a pair of Orion 600ds for $200, I have bought 2 of those already from IKE...

Ok. That's basically all the info I needed. Think I should go with one of the class D's or go with a kicker 1000.1?
Also, know of any good places to pick up 2 gauge power wire?

Might try partsexpress.com's P3 stuff...or Knukonceptz.com
